Athens-Clarke Literacy Council

The Athens-Clarke Literacy Council (ACLC) is a nonprofit, volunteer organization that promotes and supports learning opportunities for adult residents in the Athens community. We believe that developing strong literacy skills enables learners to improve their chances for gainful employment, self-fulfillment, civic participation, and successful parenting.

The ACLC serves as an umbrella organization for the literacy providers in the Athens community. We hope that you will explore this site to learn more about literacy issues in our community and perhaps find a way to get involved. We have many opportunities for you to help improve literacy in Athens-Clarke County, such as tutoring students, participating in our annual spelling bee, or making a donation. The ACLC is a member of the statewide Certified Literate Community Program which is administered by the Technical College System of Georgia.

Our Mission

The Athens-Clarke Literacy Council will promote and support learning opportunities for all Athens residents to develop their literacy skills, thereby improving their chances for gainful employment, self-fulfillment, civic participation, and successful parenting.

Our main purposes and goals are to:

• Publicize the nature and extent of illiteracy among adults and the benefits the community will receive from a reduced level of adult illiteracy;
• Coordinate services among service providers and community, state, and federal agencies;
• Raise funds to support all efforts through grant writing, fund-raising, and direct solicitation;
